CALL TO ORDER BY ACTING CHAIRPERSON TOM SUTTER

REPORT ON WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT MEETING OF 7/26/10:

 

Sutter and Christine Williams summarized our first meeting with Brian Schneider, our Web Page Designer:

We are proceeding with design. Three to four weeks for the initial phase.

Agreed to be under the FOCOL Web Page and pay membership fee to the Fox Cities on Line organization.

Richter will get information on our origin, mission statement and goals to Brian for his drafting.

Brian will be in contact with Barbara Kelly of FOCOL on implementation and if they would be willing to make a Historical organizations icon on their main web page under which we and all other area groups would be found.

#    Nancy Barker, who was present, for this meeting, volunteered to do a 

      program on “What’s Haunted in the Valley”.

PROGRAM SPEAKER SHARON CLOTHIER, FORMER CURATOR OF THE OUTAGAMIE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

 

Excerpts from her presentation:

Sharon stood in for Terry Bergan, Outagamie Historical Society, Director.

Their organization operates under a variety of titles: The Outagamie Historical Society, which has done business as the Outagamie Museum, and now is known as the History Museum at the Castle.

Sharon pointed out that a great resource for our group is their Deputy Director, Matt Carpenter.

They started collecting in 1969.

In the Appleton Collection area they have:

The equipment of two Appleton Doctors.

Doctor’s Collection includes from the Cunningham donation:

1. The bag of Dr. Cunningham.

2.  Gift and Sterling items from Mrs. Cunningham.

3.  Cunningham was a partner with Dr. Benton, whose office was across 

     from the Appleton Post Crescent.        

They have a number of Patent Models of items that were created in City.

Appleton Toy Collection includes both production equipment and jigs, as well as finished Toys.

Appleton Wire Works Collection includes archival items as well as a model of shuttle in a wire weaving loom.

Artifacts from many Appleton businesses.

Many Appleton Centennial items from 1957.

Appleton Photo Collection from about 1910-1920 donated by the Schlafer Hardware family.

Miller Appleton Photo Collection donated by family of Andrew J. Miller, who served as a photographer for the Post Crescent from 1940 to 1960. 

Also have Appleton Post Crescent Article Collection donated by family of their author, Lillian Mackesy 

Currently displaying a Sports Exhibit on the Appleton High School (West) Football Team of 1947.

Also currently displaying a collection of mostly Appleton post cards. These will be shown until 12/31/10.

 

 

Clothier’s Closing Remarks:

She emphasized the majority of the County’s exhibits come from Appleton.

The Museum is always looking for volunteers to give Museum tours and help with collections.

The Outagamie Historical Society does ask that parties who wish to view specific portions of their collection  make a mutually agreeable appointment.

Sharon stressed that artifacts and antiques are only as good as the Stories that go with them.

 

General information on preserving history and suggestions received from audience: 

Nancy Barker said that the Menasha Historical Society has one of their meetings a year just to do a History Show and Tell.

Jane Azzi, a new member, suggests we do a program on Appleton Paper Mills, she has a lot of information that can be of help.

Azzi also advised we contact Karen Probst, APL, on Power Point Projects.
