NEW MEETING LOCATION FINALIZED:

 

Mark Moderson reported that Sue Bogenschutz of Atlas Coffee Mill has agreed to their restaurant as the new meeting site for the Appleton Historical Society. From now on we will meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Atlas Coffee Mill. Our first meeting will be February 16th. Bogenschutz will provide an assortment of foods and coffees with prices posted, and attendees my select and leave a free will offering.

 

UPCOMING MEETINGS AND PROGRAMS:

 

FEBRUARY MEETING – February 16.  John McFadden, retired pastor of First Congregational Church - History of Appleton churches, 1850s-1890s.

 

•MARCH MEETING – March 16. Tom McNeely- history of Appleton’s streetcars

 

•HISTORY FAIR – March 19, 9-12:30.  Held during the Indoor Winter Farmer’s Market, City Center

 

•APRIL MEETING -  April 20.   Jane Azzi, retired librarian and historian - the first paper mill in Appleton, Richmond Paper.

UPDATE ON OUR FIRST HISTORY FAIR AT THE APPLETON DOWNTOWN WINTER FARM MARKET:

 

 

The Planning committee consisting of Jim Richter, Mark Moderson, and Christine Williams met with Dujuanna Hugdahl, ADI Winter Farm Market Manager at the City Center History Fair site on January 4, 2011:

 

•ADI Confirmed History Fair Dates: February 5, 2011, and March 19, 2011.

•EXHIBITORS (RESERVED):

 

(1)   Information on the Appleton Historical Society including membership applications.

(2)   Brian Schneider with a display on how to compute scan pictures and artifacts with

your home computer.

(3)   Historic Appleton neighborhoods table:

a.      Linda Muldoon/Antionette Powell/Keith Powell - 3rd Ward

b.      Laura Leimer - City Park

c.       Patrick Casey - Arbutus Park

(4)   Tom Sutter with area historic maps display.

(5)   Jim Krueger with pictures and artifacts.

(6)   Mark Moderson with post cards, business items and artifacts.

(7)   John Marx with post cards and artifacts.

(8)   Jim Richter with Appleton antique scale display.

•Committee discussed the need for AHS Business Cards and Brochures which can be used for this event as well, we will request AHS acquire in time for the History Fair.

(THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP APPROVED DEVELOPMENT AND PURCHASE OF BOTH ITEMS FOR USE AT THE HISTORY FAIR).

•Volunteers will be needed for setup and takedown.

 

PROGRAM SPEAKER – David Lee, Former Director of the Paper Discovery Center “Paper Making and Its Ties to the Fox Valley”

 

•Lee’s Background:

A.     33 years staff member with Bergstrom Glatfelter Paper, Neenah. Retired as Plant Manager.

B.     Past 4 years he has served as an educator and Executive Director of the Paper Discovery Center.

 

•Program:

A.     Water the primary attractant to the industry in coming to the Fox River Valley.

B.     The locks and channels supplied power for the paper mills and paper treatment.

 

C.     We learned that paper is made by putting together separate, individual fibers.

D.    Paper has been made from not only wood, but also rags and other items.

E.     The Paper Discovery Center recognizes this entire industry and showcases many exhibits of

pictures, artifacts and equipment from the industry.

F.      In the few short years they have been open they have had over 42,000 visitors.
