 REVIEW OF UPCOMING MEETINGS AND PROGRAMS:

 

·        December – No Monthly Meeting, Happy Holiday!

·        December 1 –AHS History Fair, City Center, Downtown Appleton

·        January 16 - Gwen Sargeant and David Buss will discuss the history of Appleton Street and names.

·        February 20 – Chris Shaw, Director of Utilities, The History of the Appleton Water Department.

·        March 2 - History Fair, Inside the Appleton City Center, as part of the Indoor Farmers Marke

 

·        March 20 – Matt Astleford, St. Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, The History of St. Elizabeth Hospital.

·        April 17 – Tom and Janet Sutter will present “ Unique Homes of Appleton”

·        May 15 – Matt Jackering, Junior Warden, “The History of Waverly Masonic Lodge #51”.

 

APPLETON  HISTORICAL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION:

 

·         Until 12/31/12 Officers and Committee Chairs for the organization are as follows:

PRESIDENT SUTTER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

A.   Thanks to Tony Knuppel, President of Appleton Marble & Granite, for last month’s program on their historic Appleton business.

B.   Thanks to Randy Stadtmueller for the use of Suite 150 in the historic Atlas Paper Mill

Complex for tonight’s meeting. We are in negotiations for use of the facilities into 2013.

C.   You can find previous meeting presentations on YouTube.

D.   Door Prize – 3 $5.00 Gift Certificates for Mary’s Family Restaurant were awarded. 

 

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING:

 

A.  President Sutter began our Annual Business Meeting.

B.  Treasurer’s Report was filed.

C.  Annual elections were held. Christine Williams, Karen Probst, and Tom Sutter were re-elected to the Board of Directors for a 3 year term ending November 2015. Jim Krueger was nominated and elected to a 1 year term on the Board ending November 2013 as a replacement for Jim Richter, who resigned.

D.   The Board of Directors sought a replacement for Jim Richter as Secretary, due to his resignation. As no one came forth, Richter agreed to stay on until a successor can be found.

 

 

AHS COMMUNICATIONS REPORTS:

 

A.    Christine Williams, Vice President, and Communications Committee Member:

1.   Membership Relations:

a. Gave a summary of upcoming AHS programs through May (See List Above).

b. Pointed out copies of past Monthly Meeting Minutes and Newsletters are available at the

   Registration Table.

c.Also advised that 2013 Membership Cards for paid members are also at the Registration

   Table.

 

CHRISTMAS AT CONKEYS REPORT:

 

Tom Sutter, Chairman, reported on our Annual Christmas at Conkey’s event which was just held on 11/20/12 and proved a huge success. Some 325 kids and their parents participated. Everyone enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies, warming up and listening to a Christmas story. Members of the Appleton Historical Society again showed Appleton history exhibits.

 

Thanks to AHS members that participated. Mark Moderson, Jim Richter, Brian Schneider, Barb Bacon, Karen Moderson, Laura Leimer, and Christy Marmor.

 

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of Conkey’s business and building owner John Zimmerman.

 

 

5th ANNUAL AHS HISTORY FAIR PREPARATIONS SET:

 

James Richter,  Co-Chairman:

a.    Planning continues.for  the December 1, 2012. HISTORY  FAIR: The event will again be held at the City Center, Downtown Appleton, as part of the Appleton Downtown Winter Farm Market:

b.    A Central Theme has been selected for the event and it will be Appleton Soda Bottling Companies.

c.    A Focus Exhibit will also be done on the History of Appleton (formerly known as Appleton Papers).

d.    Volunteers are needed for setup and take down.

 

 

 

 

PROGRAM-    

 

·        November 21 - Appleton Picture Show- BYOP (Bringing Your Own Pictures) to share and discuss.

Moderators:

.

A.    Our own Board Members Brian Schneider and Gwen Sargeant.

B.     Pictures and postcards were scanned and then projected on a screen for the audience to view and discuss. Dave Kalz along with other guests provided media.

 

Members and Guests Brought Their Own Pictures and Post Cards Displayed as Follows:

.

A.     Amos Story, Appleton’s First Mayor.          

B.      Appleton’s 1st Hockey Team shown was the 1924-1925 Team, (Walter Bell). Team was sponsored by Galpin’s Hardware.

C.     St. Joe’s Park early 1920’s, the popular ice rink was included in the picture.

D.    The Reo Theater, North Oneida Street:

1.       Built about 1929

2.      It had 2000 seats

3.      Was an Atmospheric Theater and one of the first of this type north of Milwaukee

4.      Was noteworthy for it’s noteworthy organ.

5.      The Mickey Mouse Club show was portrayed on their stage on one occasion.

6.      Lobby was large and very beautiful

E.     Andy Jimos Hat and Shoe Repair, 277 E. College Avenue(Jim Krueger)

F.      Appleton Manufacturing (Mike Broeren). A maker of farm equipment. A scene before 1894.

G.    Post Card of first canal beyond Lock on the Fox River:

1.      Called “The U.S. Government Canal”
