PRESIDENT SUTTER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

A. Thanks to Matt Astleford, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Development Specialist for last month’s program on the History of St. Elizabeth Hospital.

B. Thanks again to Randy Stadtmueller for the use of Suite 150 in the historic Atlas Paper

Mill Complex for tonight’s meeting.

C.Just a reminder that previous meeting presentations can be found on YouTube.

D. Door Prize – a $10.00 Gift Certificate for Coventry Glass Works was provided by Board

Member Linda Muldoon. The Door prize was won by Janelle LaViolette.

E. Tom has acquired two Historic Photos of Appleton that are now on display in Suite 150..

F. As a follow up to our prior program on Appleton Water Utilities, Sutter announced that

the Walnut Street Water Reservoir destruction has begun.

G. Sutter reports that the AHS Board has been evaluating meeting dates and asks for

comment on switching our Regular Monthly Meeting from the Third Wednesday of the

month to the Second. Membership wishes to continue the Third Wednesday.

 

B. HISTORIC EVENTS COMING IN THE AREA:

1. There will be a “Lunch at Lawrence” Event on May 10 – School History will be highlighted. Look for more information on Google.

2. Watch for many events on the Pierce Manufacturing 100th Anniversary.

 

VICE PRESIDENT WILLIAMS ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

A. Presented a review of upcoming events and programs as listed above.

B. Noted that a new advertisement method will be used to notify the community of our

Activities. These “Posters with a Purpose” should bring ever greater community

awareness of what we are about.

C. Encouraged us all to participate in or observe the June 21, 2013, River Front Bike

Ride being organized by our own Gwen Sargeant.

 

AHS Public Open House Final Planning – Sunday, April 28, 2013:

 

Gwen Sargeant and Jim Richter reported on our upcoming 1st Public Open House planned for Sunday, April 28, 2013. The AHS Board approved displaying Historic exhibits, originally planned for City Hall, at the Open House/

 

Volunteers were sought from the audience to help put up the exhibits on Saturday April 20th. Plans include serving a beverage, and cookies and bars donated by members. Donated items can be delivered to Suite 150 just prior to the event.

 

AHS Cemetery Walk – Sunday, August 18, 2013:

 

President Sutter also reported on the Board’s approval for another Cemetery Walk. The event will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at Riverside Cemetery. Gwen Sargeant will again be serving as Chairman. More information forthcoming.

 

 

PROGRAM- Tom and Janet Sutter “ Unique Homes of Appleton”

 

The Sutters:

 

A. Tom Sutter has served as a private attorney in Appleton for decades. In recent years he has maintained a private practice, the Sutter Law Firm. He is a cofounder and current President of the Appleton Historical Society.

B. Janet Sutter is a Concert Musician and regularly performs with major orchestras throughout the country.

C. Both have a deep love of Appleton and Outagamie History.

 

Introduction:

A. For sometime they have been admiring the wide diversity of Historic homes we have in Appleton. Their interest evolved into taking pictures, researching properties and categorizing these.

B. They touted the night’s program as a “Generous Baker’s Dozen of Appleton’s Historic Homes”.

 

 

Twelve Unique Historic Homes:

 

A. ONE OF A KIND BUILDINGS:

1. 634 W. Verbrick Street - the Log Cabin.

2. 703 S. Memorial Drive – built in 1911 by Tom Ryan was done in a Prairie Oriental style.

3. 607 W. Prospect Avenue – sitting next to the Historic Hearthstone was built by Frank and Kathleen Isaacson in 1984. Consists of 4 levels, with the top floor at ground level.

B. QUEEN ANNE STYLE HOMES (popular from 1880 to 1900):

1. 602 S. Walnut Street.

2. 220 S. Morrison Street.

3. 318 E. Franklin Street (Franklin Street Inn)

4. 402 E. Pacific Street (originally occupied by Judge Thomas Ryan).

5. 1208 N. Oneida Street.

6. 826 E. Alton Street.

C. OTHER UNIQUE HOMES:

1. 524 E. North Street (corner of North and Union Streets-an Eclectic Resurgence-the President of Tuttle Press was the original owner).

2. 532 N. Sampson Street (a California Bungalow with double gables).

3. 1212 Opechee Street (a cottage built in 1926 with a thatched roof look).

4. 1112 N. Leminwah Street (English Cottage Style with Gables and Dormers).

5. 2018 N. Owaissa Street.

 

A Family Grouping (The Bahcall Compound):

 

A. ONE OF A KIND BUILDINGS:

1. 1910 N. Drew Street – the original home of Isadore and Rebecca Bahcall

2. 1916 N. Drew Street – the original home of Rose and Walter Rosenweig.

3. 415 E. Glendale Avenue – the home of Al Ziven and wife Donna (nee Bachcall)

 

Other Noteworthy Homes:

 

A. 1909 N. Union Street – (Metal Lustron) built in 1949 for $9,000.

B. 1423 N. Union Street – (English Tudor) built in 1937.

C. 417 N. Durkee Street – (Stick Style) this is the 26 room, historic Hammel House which faces City Park.

D. 315 E. South River – (Modern Gothic/Stick Style) Built in 1875 by Quincy Marston.

E. 730 S. State Street –(Sculpture House).

F. 2519 N. McDonald Street – Tom & Janet Sutter’s Home, built in 1965.

 

Conclusion:

 

A. This was a six month project to study and collect data on the wide variety of homes they found interest in.
